Prerequisites None.
Course Description This is a studio-centred exploration of the structural, organizational, perceptual, social and psychological aspects of three-dimensional art.
Course Content, Objectives This introductory course is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to explore the range of materials, processes, and ideas related to design, primarily in two and three dimensions. While it is a studio-based course, there will also be opportunities to engage in viewing and responding to art works, architecture, advertising and consumer objects. Students will also explore some aspects of art history and criticism so as to become more knowledgeable about the importance of design in art and in everyday life, and to develop personal design skills. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the student will demonstrate: understanding of design vocabulary and concepts; growth in skill in the handling of art materials and processes; awareness of, and appreciation for the role of design in society.
Course Activities Activities include lectures and demonstrations, studio practice and gallery visits. Studio activities may involve drawing, painting, collage/assemblage, carving, sculpturing, hand-building and working with small power tools. Students may also participate in other university activities such as attending lectures by visiting speakers and other events connected to the Art Department and The Nickle Galleries.
Course Policy Course policy is consistent with the Department of Art and the University of Calgary Calendar for 2008-2010. Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with University regulations.
Critiques These are an extremely important aspect of the course. Critiques of completed work will be held at the end of each module. FULL PARTICIPATION IN GROUP CRITIQUES IS ESSENTIAL!
Assessment There is no final examination in this course. For those students who need a grade in this course, marks are based on term work and class participation and will depend on the following:
  • Evidence within the work of an understanding about the principles of composition.
  • Evidence within the work that the tools and techniques were used correctly and that the student has paid attention to details.
  • The student's level of commitment to the course, attendance and deadlines.
Five studio projects will be assigned, each worth 15% of the final mark. One formal analysis essay will be expected -- six double-spaced pages in length and typed -- worth 10% of the final grade. All projects and the essay must be completed to pass the course. Participation is worth 15%.
Materials Estimated cost - Approximately $100. To find a list of necessary supplies, click this link: Supply List. There is an art store located in the Art Building, Room 740 (store hours are posted on the door). The Bookstore in MacEwan Student Centre also sells art supplies, as do several other shops around town (look up Art Supplies in the Yellow Pages). Some materials will be available through the Wood Shop during regular business hours, or at a building supply store such as Home Depot and Rona. Occasionally, costs can be reduced considerably by collecting materials from home, work, friends and family.
Basic Drawing, Painting and Sculpting Supplies Estimated cost - Approximately $200. Each student should purchase a starter set of acrylic paints with 60 ml tubes of Primary Cyan, Crimson Red, Primary Yellow and a 250 ml tube of Titanium White, one 500 ml bottle of acrylic polymer emulsion painting medium (gloss or semi-gloss, not matte), 3 hog hair or nylon paint brushes, filbert shaped with long handles (sizes #2, #4, #8), a palette knife, a mixing palette (the lid from an ice cream pail works well), containers for water (yogurt containers will suffice), a straight edge, an Exacto knife with several #11 replacement blades, a utility knife with retractable snap-off blades, scissors, clean rags or paper towels, a bar of hand soap and a role of painter's masking tape, several pencils of different hardnesses (4B, HB, 4H), a kneadable gum eraser, a can of fixative (hair spray is a cheap alternative), a bottle of white glue, a hot glue gun with glue sticks, a hammer, pliers, a tape measure, screw driver with interchangeable bits and several sheets of sandpaper in various grits such as 50, 100, 150 (or 80, 120, 200), a sanding block (a hand-sized block of wood works fine). As mentioned in the paragraph above, there is an art store located in the Art Building; hours are posted on the door. The Bookstore in the MacEwan Student Centre also sells art supplies, as do several other shops around town; just look up 'Art Supplies' in the Yellow Pages.
Models In some Fine Arts classes students are expected to draw from nude models. It is expected that students electing not to draw/paint from the nude model must notify their professor in writing of their choice and then make alternate arrangements to complete the work.
Portfolios and Projects The Department of Art will not assume responsibility for lost or stolen portfolios or Projects given to instructors for grading, or for work posted on bulletin boards in the Art building. ALL UNCLAIMED WORK WILL BE DISPOSED OF TWO WEEKS AFTER THE END OF CLASSES.
Lockers The Art Building lockers are administered through the Student's Union used bookstore, Bound and Copied. Lockers are rented on a first come, first served basis. Due to the shortage of lockers, and the high demand, students cannot hold more than one locker at a time. All of the details on renting a locker and your responsibilities can be found on the Locker Rental Agreement.
Lockers for all sessions can be rented through http://my.ucalgary.ca/. Once you've accessed the Student Centre, click on Other Academic Services and choose "Locker Reservation". Lockers must be vacated by the end of term. For more information, go to http://www.su.ucalgary.ca/.
